Using 360° Tools

The Senior Leadership Profile (SLP); Executive Leadership Profile (ELP) and Team Leadership Profile (TLP), LPP360's three ILS-based feedback profiles are multi-source feedback instruments designed specifically for the APS.

SLP, ELP and TLP

The instruments have been tested for validity and reliability across a user base of over 5,500 participants, with participants drawn from more than thirty APS departments and agencies. User responses have always been very positive.

The SLP, ELP and TLP are look-alike sister instruments based on the Integrated Leadership System. Because they are so closely related they can be used together to provide 360° feedback for single vertical slice work groups comprising staff ranging from APS 4 through to SES Band 2.

Questionnaire

A major consideration in the design of SLP, ELP and TLP was the need to maximise flexibility, clarity and accessibility for users and limit completion time so as to minimise rater fatigue. There are consequently 60 questions which take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete for each of the three instruments. Comprehensive feedback is ensured through a total of 360 question responses from the subject and their five raters.

For both the respondent and their supervisor there are an additional 20 questions which ask them to rate how important they rate each of the capabilities. This information can be invaluable in helping respondents judge the extent to which they and their supervisor share a common perspective on the importance of the different elements of their job.

Emotional Intelligence

A special feature of the SLP, ELP and TLP, as compared with most other commercially available feedback instruments, is their inclusion of an Emotional Intelligence (EI) Quotient, which is calculated from 24 of the 60 questions which are emotional intelligence-related. Given the importance of emotional intelligence this feature was included to provide an emotional intelligence assessment and EQ rating within the participants’ final profiles. Unlike some other ‘stand alone’ Emotional Intelligence tests, the ELP, TLP and SLP offer the subject insights into their EQ from both their own and their raters’ perspectives.

Additional Features

An aspect of the ELP, TLP and SLP which is not typically featured in competitor products is their combination of quantitative or numeric ratings with qualitative rater comments. The ‘qualitative comments’ section covers the subject’s achievements, training and development options and strategies for improvement. This section is immensely helpful in assisting participants to interpret and better understand differences between their self assessment and their raters’ views.

Access to the ELP, TLP and SLP and submission of responses is managed via a secure website. Hence the questionnaires can be completed at work, home or while travelling, with raters able to exit and return to the website at will. Preliminary subject/rater instructions are all transmitted electronically. Alternatively, where respondents do not have on-line access then hard copies can be used.

An important adjunct to the ELP, TLP and SLP reports is the practical action planning tool, the Workbook, which accompanies them. The Workbook provides a step-by-step guide to enable participants to plan for real, measurable, incremental growth and development, based on the 360° feedback received.

Use and Form of the Reports

LPP360's clients have affirmed the usefulness of ELP, TLP and SLP as an adjunct to development, performance management, executive coaching and career planning. By better targeting these activities, the ELP, TLP and SLP can actually improve the return on investment for both the individual and the organisation.

In their final form the ELP, TLP and SLP reports take the form of a 50-page spiral bound, personalised report. The reports are confidential in that only the TLS processing team in Auckland, LPP360's Canberra team and the consultant handling the project see them before they are handed to individual participants.

The ELP, TLP and SLP instruments are very competitive in terms of price, accessibility, processing turnaround time and quality. Profile report prices are based on one profile report and six completed rater questionnaires (self, supervisor and four others). Courier delivery charges are additional and are charged at cost.

ESIP and SIP

The Emotional and Social Intelligence Profile (ESIP) and the Strategic Intelligence Profile (SIP) are structured, completed and used in exactly the same manner as the ELP, TLP and SLP. The principal difference between them is that instead of being based on the Integrated Leadership System (ILS), each of them is built around their own respective capability framework.

There are a range of benefits associated with using a proven suite of 360° feedback profiles.
